Asus's new T300 Chi: A fine Windows tablet with delusions of laptop grandeur

Motorola has long taken the extreme route with its naming conventions and Samsung always seems to promise an entire Galaxy. But Asus’s approach is far less dramatic than much of the competition

The company has focused its efforts on taking a far more peaceful approach to consumer electronics, first through its Zen line and now in the form of its latest Transformer convertible tablet, the T300 Chi.

In Taoist philosophy, Chi represents the vital life force circulating through all living things — and more to the point, in the case of this Windows 8.1 tablet, a balance between negative and positive forces essential to harmonic living. For Asus, it’s striking the balance between the two often-at odds gadget categories of laptop and tablet, an attempt to design a product that fulfills the need for both. Read more…

Google Panda is the April Fools' joke you wish was a real product

It’s already April Fools’ Day in Japan and Google isn’t wasting any time.

In a video posted to Google Japan’s YouTube page, the company introduced Google Panda, its new adorable take on voice-enabled search.

“Google Panda is engineered with state of the art emotional and conversational intelligence,” promises vice president of engineering, Chris Yerga, in the video. “All you have to do is speak your mind.”

Later, a Google engineer takes the stage to walk through the design inspiration (a real-life panda, of course) and the various features of Panda, which include its extra cute, mobile and shock-absorbing abilities. In keeping with Google’s tendency to make devices in multiple sizes, Panda is available in the “compact” Google Panda 5 and Google Panda 6. Read more…

This Is Why #Brands Should Not Make April Fools’ Jokes

Welcome to the stupidest week in technology’s religious calendar: April Fools’ week. This isn’t the worst week. That slot remains filled by the Vegas confab that shall not be named. But be prepared for the next bit to be bored by trivial jokes, written by committee, and then signed off on by PR teams to ensure that any soul that might have been present in the words has… Read More

Facebook giveth traffic. Hath Facebook taken it away?

The social network said on Tuesday afternoon that it had given news publishers underwhelming data reports about how many people see posts on its NewsFeed

In the fraught relationship between Facebook and the news business, that blip reignited the concern of news publishers that Facebook’s important traffic had suddenly been cut back as it looks to embrace native video and other forms of media. Read more…

Don’t Read The Comments — Let Diffbot Analyze Them Instead

Diffbot’s mission, according to CEO Mike Tung, involves “teaching a robot how to read and understand web pages.” Today it expanded that understanding to include forums, comments, reviews, and other online discussions.
When Tung talks about understanding web pages, he means turning the content into structured data — say, looking at an article and identifying the title… Read More

Introducing the selfie shoe

Because selfie sticks weren’t annoying enough, here’s a product with the potential to make you lose all hope in your fellow humans

In a completely serious campaign that’s definitely not in anyway related to April Fools’ Day, Miz Mooz has unveiled its latest shoe innovation: selfie shoes

With smartphone docking ports on both feet, the selfie shoes offer a glimpse of a terrifying dystopian future that we hope never actually comes to pass

If there’s one good thing that would come out of this product, it would at least provide selfie lovers with a loophole that lets them circumvent the stick bans at Coachella and various art galleries. Read more…
